Attention Aerial Lift Trainers
There have recently been revisions made to the Canadian and US versions of the aerial lift operator training materials and the aerial equipment inserts in the Trainer's Manual. The revisions were made in relation to the following issues:
In Canada - Although there are regulatory references to ANSI/SIA A92 standards in most Canadian provinces like BC for example, in some provinces there are not. In fact, the Ministry of Labour (MOL) in the province of Ontario specifically references CSA B354 aerial lift standards which are similar, but not exactly the same.
The IVES Scissor Lift, Aerial Boomlift and Aerial lifts (combined) Operator Reference Manuals made several references to the ANSI/SIA requirement to have the current applicable ANSI/SIA A92 Manual of Responsibilities stored on the unit at all times. Since these standards are not incorporated by regulatory reference in some Canadian provinces, "(where applicable)" has been added to the text in each book following any references to the ANSI/SIA A92 Manual of Responsibilities.
Another revision is related to fall protection on aerial boomlifts. Since this reference in the books was made in the Chapter 8 Review Quiz, it affected the answer keys in the equipment inserts of the Trainer's Manual. The revised pages of the boom, scissor and aerial lifts trainer's manual equipment inserts are available for free download from the IVES website.

In the United States - Based on a January 2009 OSHA Interpretation regarding fall protection for aerial boomlift operators, all references to the use of fall arrest lanyards with shock absorbing and/or deceleration devices has been removed. Since the standard 6-foot lanyard with a shock absorbing lanyard requires 18 ½ feet to fully deploy, OSHA has deemed that this type of fall arrest system is inadequate for boomlift operators at platform heights less than 18 ½ feet as a fall from this height or less would allow an impact to occur. Fixed length fall restraint lanyards are not specifically required but would meet OSHA requirements for protecting workers from a fall in the even they are ejected from the platform of a boomlift.
