Excavator Upgrade - Train-the-Trainer
The Excavator Upgrade Program is designed for IVES Certified Trainers who wish to acquire the technical knowledge needed to train operators of mini, compact, and standard medium-duty excavators. This program is delivered at selected training locations on an open enrolment basis.
Program Details - Excavator Trainer Upgrade
This one-day program is designed for IVES Certified Instructors and will upgrade their credentials to include the various excavators addressed. All program attendees will gain technical knowledge of this equipment through classroom study and hands-on exercises.
Program Duration: One (1) dayEquipment: Excavators
- Wheeled (rubber tire) and tracked (crawler) units.
- Mini/compact/ medium-duty units with the approximate gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 3,000 to 50,000 lbs. (1,360 to 22,680 kg.)
Program Structure:
- Classroom theory training - 50%
- Practical hands-on training - 50%

Program Outline - Excavator Trainer Upgrade
- Excavator interactive theory review:- The Rules: regulations, standards, manufacturer's instructions, company/site policies
- Types of Excavators: wheeled, crawler, mini, compact and standard types
- Main Parts and Their Functions: undercarriage, turret/house, digging/work assembly
- Specifications: unit dimensions and capabilities
- Stability and Capacity: leverage, center of gravity, load weight, unit configuration, the stability rectangle/pyramid and motion
- Getting Ready for the Job: PPE, inspections, assessing and securing the worksite
- Safe Operating Procedures: set-up, making a pass, undercutting, trenching, soil/materials compaction, proper lifting procedure
- Parking, Shutdown and Transporting
- Re-fueling
- Practical training & evaluation (hands-on) exercises
- Parking and shut down (hands on)
Pre- Program Requirements - Excavator Trainer Upgrade
Trainees enrolled in the Excavator Trainer Upgrade Program will be sent an Excavator Operator Reference Manual a minimum of one week prior to the program for review and completion. Each trainee must bring their completed manual with them on the day of the program.
