Counterbalanced Forklift Operator Beginner Program

| Prerequisites: | Please be aware that attendees of all training programs delivered by IVES must have functional English language reading, writing and speaking skills. |
Important Details
- Trainees will be sent a Counterbalanced Forklift Operator Reference Manual in advance. Trainees must read the entire workbook, complete the quizzes throughout and bring their completed workbook to the program. Completion of the workbook is madatory and successful completion of this program depends on it.
- PPE: Trainees MUST wear steel-toed shoes, and bring a hard hat if possible.
- A portion of this program will be outdoors therefore wear appropriate clothing.
- It is the registering company's responsibility to ensure that each registered trainee requires certification on the counterbalanced forklift. This training program is for counterbalanced forklifts only and does NOT include the narrow aisle forklift (reach truck), or powered pallet truck.
- Unique conditions specific to the equipment and/or working environment encountered by operators may require that employers provide additional training and evaluation where appropriate. For more information please visit our website -> Resource Center, Regulations and Standards.
- IVES reserves the right to reschedule or cancel this training program for reasons including low enrollment and logistical difficulties.
Program Fees
$395 per person plus HST. Payable to IVES Training Group, Inc.
The Counterbalanced Forklift Operator Beginner Program is delivered by the IVES Training Group over a period of two 8-hour days.
This program is for persons with little or no operational experience who would like to obtain the minimum required level of knowledge and skill needed to safely operate a forklift. The program addresses the theory and practical operation of engine powered, sit-down counterbalanced forklifts only*.
NOTE: This program is not specific to any job, working conditions, or equipment outside of those found at the training site. Additional specific training and evaluation is required at the work site.
*Engine powered forklifts are used for practical training and evaluations.
Program Details
Each trainee receives a Counterbalanced Forklift Operator Reference Manual at the time of registration which must be pre-read and brought to the program completed. Program attendees are trained, evaluated and graded on their knowledge of equipment theory and ability to demonstrate safe operation in a hands-on practical driving skills test.
* Electric battery powered forklifts are NOT addressed.

Classroom theory training - 25%

Program Outline
Phase 1 - Classroom Training (4 hrs.)
Occupational health and safety regulations
Applicable industry standards
Equipment theory:
- Types of forklifts
- Main parts and their functions
- Basic lifting principles
- Safe operation
- Fuel types & refueling
Phase 2 - Written Theory Test (30 min.)
Theory test based on the concepts discussed during classroom training.
Test consists of 9 multiple choice questions and 1 essay type question.
Program Trainer grades and scores each test upon completion.
Test answers are reviewed with the trainees as a group.
Test results are reviewed individually to ensure understanding.
Minimum score of 70% is required to pass the written test.
Phase 3 - Practical Hands-On Training (8 hrs.*)
This is the hands-on portion of the program in which trainees are shown safe operating procedures and given the opportunity to practice under the supervision of the program Trainer. Each trainee's skill level is assessed until an acceptable level of operational competence is observed. When observed, the trainee advances to the fourth and final phase of the program. - Stopping, starting & turning
- Loading & unloading procedures
- Transporting loads
- Restricted vision
- Vehicle / Pedestrian traffic
- Special operating conditions
Refueling / Propane cylinder change out.
Phase 4 - Practical Evaluation (30 min. per trainee*)
Each trainee goes through a hands-on evaluation using an engine powered, sit-down counterbalanced forklift on a course designed with tasks that challenge the trainees sufficiently for the program Trainer to make an accurate assessment of their operational competence. A basic minimum level of demonstrated competence throughout the performance of 6 to 10 tasks is required to successfully complete this phase of the program. *Time may vary
Following the practical evaluation, each trainee is de-briefed and given the opportunity to address any issues they may have regarding any phase of the program. If successful, the trainees receive an interim certificate of successful completion while awaiting official documentation from IVES.
