Please be advised that revisions and additions have been made to our existing operator training materials as follows:

1.    Excavator (EXC):
       a.    The Operator Reference Manual (ORM) - is significantly revised with new, updated information and graphics.        Some items to take note of concerning the new ORM are:
       i.    It specifically addresses units that share the following design features:
            1.    Crawler-type units that travel over the ground on continuous, steel or rubber tracks.
            2.    Commonly powered by internal combustion engines, usually diesel engines.
            3.    Typically fitted with a material bucket but can be equipped with a variety of work attachments.
            4.    Light to medium duty units including those designated as mini, compact and standard types.

b.    The EXC Operator Final Written Test – is updated and consistent with the ORM.

The frame numbering system is also now consistent with all the other equipment DTAs. Trainers of BHL operators that choose to use this invaluable training aid will add a dimension of colorful, visual accompaniment to their training programs

e.    ORM Chapter Review Indexes (SUP-202-e) – is an extremely useful document provides EXC trainers with a detailed guide listing the correct answers and locations of every chapter review question in the ORM as well as the questions in the operator final written test. More than just an answer key, the indexes within this document not only provide the correct answers to every question, but the exact location(s) of where the supporting information is found in the ORM. Trainers of EXC operators can use this document to familiarize themselves with the revised ORM and use it as a reference during training.

We are pleased to announce the release of the third generation of our popular CASTLE Model.

For those of you who may not know, the name of the model is an acronym of the words, CApacity, STability and, LEverage, each of which can be demonstrated using the CASTLE Model.

The most significant feature of this latest version is that in now has a rectangular base, which means it can now be used to demonstrate the Stability Pyramid for powered mobile equipment with a four-point suspension, such as loaders and MEWPs.

However, it can still be configured to demonstrate the three-point base Stability Pyramid common to most forklifts.

We have received a lot of positive feedback on the CASTLE Model from our Certified Trainers over the years and we’re sure this newest, more versatile version will be even more useful.

Current IVES CTs are eligible for a 15% discount On CASTLE Models by using promo code CASTLE15 until March 11, 2025.

Fourwinds Construction Inc. has been fined $130,000 after a worker was fatally injured at a road widening project in Vaughan, Ont.

On Aug. 31, 2023, three workers employed by the company were installing a headwall, a wall of concrete with a hole near the middle that frames the outlet of a drainage pipe or culvert. As they attempted to fit the headwall to the pipe, the workers determined the excavation site was not wide enough to align the headwall, requiring further digging.

To clear the area for digging, the excavator operator moved the headwall and placed it in an upright position. Workers removed the chain sling from the excavator boom and attached the digging bucket.

While excavating to fit the headwall, the excavator bucket contacted the headwall, causing it to tip and fatally injure a worker.

Fourwinds Construction pleaded guilty to failing, as an employer, to ensure a headwall was moved and stored in a manner that did not endanger a worker, as required by section 37(1) of Regulation 213/91, contrary to section 25(1)(c) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The court also imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.

Q: How soon after the theory test should the practical evaluation be conducted?

A: That depends on how much hands-on training and practice is needed to get the trainee ready for the evaluation. When I conduct operator training, I find that getting to the hands-on training and evaluation as soon as possible after the classroom/theory training helps cement the theory training into the operating side
